Put your best pet forward in Ryde

Pets of all shapes and sizes are being invited to be on their best behaviour and show off their shiny coats for a charity pet show in Ryde.

Colleagues at The Co-operative Funeralcare in Ryde are brushing up on their pet skills for their first ever pet show on Sunday 14 July.

The show will be held at Ryde Scouts Hall, in St John’s Road, from 2pm to 4pm.

Rosette prizes are up for grabs in all five categories:
• Best turned out dog
• Prettiest cat
• Cutest rabbit or small animal
• Most unusual pet
• Best behaved pet

The event will be in aid of The Wight Brainy Bunch – a local brain tumour charity which runs a monthly support group, provides financial assistance to families struggling with added expenses, and supports much needed research via The Brain Tumour Charity.

Sam Walker, Funeral Co-ordinator at The Co-operative Funeralcare in Ryde, said: “I’ve nervously agreed that all pets are allowed as long as they are not out on the loose. I might regret that but hopefully it will be a laugh!

“Our Operations Manager Elaine is going to be the judge so she is the lucky one who will get up close and personal with the Island’s pets. It is all for a good cause too.

“The Wight Brainy Bunch charity is incredibly special as it was set up by a local couple, Mark and Kathryn Grimes, after he was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2015.”

The Wight Brainy Bunch is being supported as part of Southern Co-op’s community engagement programme ‘Love Your Neighbourhood’. This initiative addresses four key social themes – promoting greener, healthier, safer, and more inclusive neighbourhoods.

The cost to enter is £3 per pet per category.

There will also be a raffle, a barbecue and refreshments available.

Easter artwork celebrated in Frimley

Colourful and meaningful drawings will be proudly displayed in Frimley Green’s village centre to celebrate all things Easter.

Over the last few weeks, children at Frimley C of E Junior School have been hard at work creating pictures for this year’s Easter Artwork Competition.

Judged by the school’s head teacher and The Co-operative Funeralcare in Frimley, the winning entries will now be proudly displayed in branch until Easter.

Lorraine Paice, Funeral Co-ordinator at the new branch at no.3 Wharf Road, said: “We opened our doors on 7 January and it is great to have got involved in the local community so quickly.

“Our branch is part of the regional, independent co-operative – Southern Co-op – so we have a commitment to make a difference in our local areas.

“Over the last few weeks I have helped the head of Year 4 organise the competition and had the pleasure of choosing the winning entries and presenting certificates to them at a special assembly last Friday along with some special eggs for prizes.”

The winning artists visited the new branch on Wednesday along with the Vice Chair of the Frimley Business Association Sarah Croke.

Lorraine said: “We began with a tour and then lots of questions about my job and funerals, they were all very impressed with the branch and said how bright and cheerful it was and how nice it smelt. They had a great time, very inquisitive and really brightened my day.

“Much to their delight I had also organised some Easter cakes, drinks and sweets. Before leaving the children presented me with copies of their wonderful artwork which will be proudly displayed in the branch for all to see.”

Tails to wag at the charity dog show

Four legged friends across the Isle of Wight are being invited to show off their smiles and practice their best party tricks for a charity dog show in Bembridge.

Colleagues at Southern Co-op’s Funeralcare in Shanklin are brushing up on their dog handling skills for their first ever dog show on Sunday 2 September.

The show will be held at the Bembridge Scout Hut, in Mitten Road, with a long list of dog show categories to enter from most handsome and best working dog to the most obedient and best party trick.

The event will be in aid of Miss Isle and the MissIsle School of sip-puff sailing as part of Southern Co-op’s community engagement programme ‘Love Your Neighbourhood’.

Miss Isle aka Natasha Lambert has athertoid cerebral palsy and uses a sip and puff system to control her sailing boat. The school is for physically disabled individuals who want to go sailing but aren’t able to sail a conventional boat.

Karen Cooper, Funeral Co-ordinator at the Shanklin funeral home, said: “Natasha is such an inspiration to other people and she is always smiling. She sails to a mountain and then climbs it! We just want to try and raise some money so they can get more kids out on the water.

“I’m sure the dog show will be good fun. I’m an animal lover and I love dogs in particular. We regularly hold charity events but this time I wanted to do something a bit different and I know that there are a lot of people on the island who love their dog as much as me.”

The dog show will start at 11am and entry will be £2 per category or £5 for three categories with 1st, 2nd and 3rd rosettes. Judging the competition will be Helen Bull from Calm Dog Training Academy.

There will also be a range of other activities to get involved in including a raffle, guess the name of the puppy, a stand offering tea, coffee and cake, and other stalls selling a range of doggy delights.

Miss Isle is the funeral home’s chosen cause as part of Southern Co-op’s community engagement programme ‘Love Your Neighbourhood’. This initiative addresses four key social themes for promoting: ‘Greener’, ‘Healthier’, ‘Safer’, and ‘More Inclusive’ neighbourhoods.
