Cancelled: Emsworth hat event

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THE BELOW EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED. WE APOLOGISE FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE CAUSED.

Funeral directors will be exchanging their top hats for something a little bit different at the end of March to celebrate Wear A Hat Day 2020.

Hat wearers from Emsworth and beyond are invited to join colleagues at The Co-operative Funeralcare and Cafe Moka on Friday 27 March for cakes, coffee and hats.

Set to be the biggest, boldest and ‘hattiest’ yet, Wear A Hat Day is an awareness day for Brain Tumour Research

Funeral co-ordinators at The Co-operative Funeralcare – Emsworth decided to get involved this year and hold an event in memory of their colleague, Roger Gregory, who passed away from a brain tumour earlier this year.

Cath Walter, Funeral Co-ordinator, said: “Roger was a much loved colleague and friend so the event will mean we can give a special nod to a special man.

“We are really grateful to have Café Moka, in North Street on board as everyone can come and enjoy cakes whilst wearing a hat of their choice.

“Plus there will be plastic wrist bands and lapel badges to buy on the day. It’s time to put our best hats forward!”

The event will take place from 8am until 4pm on Friday 27 March.

The Co-operative Funeralcare – Emsworth is part of the local co-operative Southern Co-op which has a community engagement programme to help communities become greener, healthier, safer and more inclusive.

Summer Fun Day in Copnor

Live music, family activities and a Disney princess are all coming together in Copnor for a Summer Fun Day in aid of a local charity.

The whole community is invited to join in with family friendly activities on Wednesday 28 August at The Baffins Pub in 127 Tangier Road, in Portsmouth.

From 1pm there will be live entertainment provided by Lisa Marie from the soul, Motown and pop duo The Estelles – who is also organising the event in her daytime role as a funeral co-ordinator.

Lisa Legg, aka Lisa Marie, works at The Co-operative Funeralcare in Copnor and is holding the event with Sharon Wallen, Leader of Not Forgotten.

The event will be raising money for Not Forgotten which gives local residents over 60 a place to socialise and remove isolation.

The member numbers have grown from five to 20 and activities range from a regular lunch club to day trips and pub quizzes.

The group is open to everyone and Sharon is hoping to raise money to help with transport for those less able.

Lisa Legg, from the Copnor branch which is part of Southern Co-op – the independent, regional co-operative, said: “I first heard about the charity Not Forgotten when I put out an appeal for community groups to get in touch who needed support – something all Southern Co-op colleagues are encouraged to do.

“As soon as I saw what the group does for local people, I knew I had to be more involved. I regularly help out at their lunch group and have donated cushions to make the chairs more comfortable.

“One of the great things about the group is that no one is excluded as even those who are under 60 are invited to join in and volunteer their time to help.”

The Summer Fun Day will include a visit from a Disney princess, Moana, around 2pm when she will be singing and signing autographs – with thanks to Gold events.

There will also be a raffle and a children’s colouring competition.

The event is not ticketed and organisers are asking for a small donation to attend – minimum of £1.

To support the charity’s members, The Baffins Pub is also kindly offering meals to members of Not Forgotten for just £3.

Ladies’ Night Fundraiser

Southern Co-op is calling on ladies across Portsmouth and beyond to enjoy an evening of prosecco, pre-loved shopping and partying in aid of Wessex Cancer Trust.

Ladies’ Night on Friday 14 September from 7-11pm

Funeral Co-ordinators at Southern Co-op’s North End funeral home are organising an evening for ladies to let loose in a bid to raise money for a project close to their hearts.

Emily Warden was supported by Wessex Cancer Trust when she was diagnosed with womb cancer in 2016. She has made lifelong friends with the support group and she has also been influenced to produce a Journal inspired by Calendar Girls.

The Journal, which will launch in November, will include tasteful images of women who have had cancer and it will share their powerful stories in order to help others going through similar situations.

Emily, Funeral Co-ordinator at Southern Co-op’s North End branch, said: “What started out as an idea when chatting to women in my support group, has almost become a reality. We have a group of women from all over the county who have shared their scars and stories for the Journal. It is so inspirational.

“But we are not quite there yet as we need extra funding to help with printing costs which is why we will came up with the idea of holding a ladies’ night. I can’t wait as it is going to be so much fun!”

The Journal has been a joint project with therapist and life coach Charlie Parker-Quaife from Q Wellness who will also be including words of wisdom in the Journal.

Tickets for Ladies’ Night cost £5 in advance or £6 on the door and includes a free glass of prosecco on arrival.

The event on Friday 14 September from 7-11pm will feature a range of stalls from candles and toiletries to make-up and pre-loved party clothes. There will also be a raffle, a silent auction and nibbles.

Then for those who want to enjoy a drink and live music, there will be singing from Katie-Louise Ball who is playing at this year’s Victorious Festival and performs a mixture of original acoustic folk and pop tracks along with a range of covers. This will be followed by a DJ who will provide music to dance to for the rest of the evening.

Taking place at The Blue Lagoon, Hilsea, tickets are available from Southern Co-op Funeralcare in North End at 52 London Road.

Wessex Cancer Trust is the funeral home’s chosen cause as part of Southern Co-op’s community engagement programme ‘Love Your Neighbourhood’. This initiative addresses four key social themes for promoting: ‘Greener’, ‘Healthier’, ‘Safer’, and ‘More Inclusive’ neighbourhoods.
