Summer Fun Day in Copnor

Live music, family activities and a Disney princess are all coming together in Copnor for a Summer Fun Day in aid of a local charity.

The whole community is invited to join in with family friendly activities on Wednesday 28 August at The Baffins Pub in 127 Tangier Road, in Portsmouth.

From 1pm there will be live entertainment provided by Lisa Marie from the soul, Motown and pop duo The Estelles – who is also organising the event in her daytime role as a funeral co-ordinator.

Lisa Legg, aka Lisa Marie, works at The Co-operative Funeralcare in Copnor and is holding the event with Sharon Wallen, Leader of Not Forgotten.

The event will be raising money for Not Forgotten which gives local residents over 60 a place to socialise and remove isolation.

The member numbers have grown from five to 20 and activities range from a regular lunch club to day trips and pub quizzes.

The group is open to everyone and Sharon is hoping to raise money to help with transport for those less able.

Lisa Legg, from the Copnor branch which is part of Southern Co-op – the independent, regional co-operative, said: “I first heard about the charity Not Forgotten when I put out an appeal for community groups to get in touch who needed support – something all Southern Co-op colleagues are encouraged to do.

“As soon as I saw what the group does for local people, I knew I had to be more involved. I regularly help out at their lunch group and have donated cushions to make the chairs more comfortable.

“One of the great things about the group is that no one is excluded as even those who are under 60 are invited to join in and volunteer their time to help.”

The Summer Fun Day will include a visit from a Disney princess, Moana, around 2pm when she will be singing and signing autographs – with thanks to Gold events.

There will also be a raffle and a children’s colouring competition.

The event is not ticketed and organisers are asking for a small donation to attend – minimum of £1.

To support the charity’s members, The Baffins Pub is also kindly offering meals to members of Not Forgotten for just £3.

Everyone is invited to visit Alton’s newest funeral home

Residents are invited to tackle the taboo of death at the official opening of Alton’s newest funeral home.

The event will be an unusual mix of charity, cakes and coffins at The Co-operative Funeralcare branch at 71 High Street.

Whether residents are overwhelmed by the idea of funeral planning or simply want to plan ahead, the event is open to everyone on Wednesday 10 July from 3pm to 6pm.

A special donation will also be made to The Vokes Lunch Club which provides a local place for the over 60s in Alton to meet others and have an enjoyable lunch in a safe place.

Funeral Co-ordinators Emma Dulieu and Jane Turk are looking forward to welcoming people into the branch which is part of Southern Co-op – the regional, independent co-operative.

Emma said: “We know first hand how baffling funerals can be. There is a lot to think about – floral tributes, coffins, caskets, memorial masonry, pre-paid funeral plans and lots more.

“Our open event will be a time to celebrate our opening and a chance to support some of our valuable local causes. But it will also give people the opportunity to ask questions in a relaxed environment.

“People will be able to find out about all things funeral-related whilst enjoying some drinks and nibbles.”

Guests will also be able to find out how the branch can support the local community through Southern Co-op’s community engagement programme. The ‘Love Your Neighbourhood’ initiative addresses four key social themes for promoting ‘Greener’, ‘Healthier’, ‘Safer’, and ‘More Inclusive’ neighbourhoods.

Everyone is invited to visit Southsea’s newest funeral home

A new locally-owned Southsea funeral home is preparing to unveil the name of its chosen charity partner at its first open event in November.

Charity, cakes and coffins will be the focus of the event on Wednesday 14 November at Southern Co-op’s new funeral home at 128 Albert Road, Portsmouth.

Funeral Co-ordinators Lucy Thomason and Laura Gaul are inviting residents to find out about its community engagement programme ‘Love Your Neighbourhood’ which includes opportunities for donations, volunteering and fundraising.

The branch’s new charity partner was selected following a county-wide appeal for nominations of good causes that promote a ‘greener’, ‘healthier’, ‘safer’ or ‘more inclusive’ neighbourhoods.

Southern Co-op’s Funeral Co-ordinator Laura said: “Funerals have never been an easy thing to think about or to plan for but, there are a lot of pre-paid funeral packages being advertised at the moment, so it is more confusing than ever.

“Luckily, because we are a funeral directors, not just a funeral planner, we can really help people understand pre-paid funerals and what support their loved ones would get if the worst were to happen.”

The new funeral home in Albert Road is part of Southern Co-op – a co-operative society owned by its members and formed in Portsmouth almost 150 years ago.

Whether residents are overwhelmed by the idea of funeral planning or simply want to plan ahead, the event is open to everyone from 5pm to 7pm.

There will also be a raffle to raise funds for the new charity partner.
